Augustus James (2009)
Augustus James, has served as Athletic Director for 19 years and as a member of the Miles College Department of Athletics for 38 years. As Athletic Director, James has spearheaded the College's commitment to Intercollegiate Athletics, transforming Miles into a contender in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). Under his direction, Miles fortunes in all sports have realized a celebrated resurgence. Golden Bear Athletic Teams have become competitive force to be reckoned with. As Athletic director, he has achieved several milestones, including the following:
2004-2006
**Wade Streeter, very successful as a young coach.
**Kenneth Hatcher, Baseball Coach - Western division Championship for 6 to 8 years.
**Patrick Peasant, Softball Championship SIAC 2009.
**Gave coaching opportunities to several other young coaches: Anthony Colvin, Willie Patterson,
Phillip Wallace, Chris Giles, etc.
1990-1992

Augustus James started his career in January 1967 in Wilkinson County, Georgia as a Seventh grade Teacher, He was employed by the St. Clair County School System in 1971. He achieved the following while there:
**First African American Coach - 1972.
**First African American Assistant Principal - 1972.
**First African American Principal - 1996-1998 Pell City School System.
**First Personnel Director - April 1998 - Pell City School System.
**Retired in June 1998 to become full-time Athletic Director at Miles College.
Other experiences are:
**1960-Present - Manager and Player of Bucksville Baseball Team - Fred Horn Industrial League.
**1969-1970 - Baseball Official with the Magic City Baseball Association.
**1993-1994 - Treasurer for Baseball - Fred Horn Baseball League.
**1998-2001 - High School Football Official.
The Centerville native is a 1966 graduate of Miles College. He received his Master's Degree in Administration from the University of Montevallo in 1977.
James is married to Renee' they are the proud parents and grandparents of three daughters and two sons: Cheryl, Erico, Vanessa, Quinton and Adriane. Also, have nine grandchildren: Devin, Martese, Kayla, Tamya, Taylor, Kenndy, Hailey, Tanner and DeMarco.

2004-2006
- Chairman of the SIAC Athletic Directors Association.
- As Chairman and a member of the Athletic Directors Association, he was instrumental in developing major corporate contracts with Nike, Reebok, Russell and Aeropostale.
- Member of the SIAC Expansion and Tournament Committee, Co-Chairman of the SIAC Baseball Tournament Committee.
- Empolyed several outstanding coaches to improve the Golden Bears athletic program:

1990-1992
- Initiated the first coach radio show.
- (Call In) WATV Radio
- Initiated the first televised game, Miles vs. Lane on Channel 19 TV. Additional games were televised the following years through 2006.
- Negotiated contracts with selected institutions to increased football revenue and to place our program in larger venues for increased visibility with Alabama A&M University, Alabama State University, Southern University, Sanford University, Auburn University and UAB.
- Developed the Church's Chicken Basketball Classic with corporate sponsor - Al Moore, Church's Chichen at Fair Park Arena.
- Instrumental in placing several sporting events at prominent venues:
**Softball @ Glen Oak Park
**Basketball @ Fair Park Arena
**Football @ Legion Field
- Developed the initial concept of the Labor Day Game with selected promoters. Also negotiated the contract for the use of Legion Field for the development of the Miles College Labor Day Golden Classic for the future through 2015.
