Cedric Lane (2012)
Cedric Lane accepted a scholarship to Miles College and graced its athletic fields in three sports. He was a member of the football, baseball and track teams from 1994 to 1996, under the leadership of Coaches Cecil Leonard, Patterson and Jolly. Mr. Lane played several positions on the football team, including defensive back, tight end and wide receiver. This football team inaugurated a significant turnaround in the Miles College football program. Cedric Lane graduated from Miles College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Language Arts Education and continued his studies at Alabama State University, earning a Master’s degree in Education. Cedric Lane choose teaching and coaching as his profession after college, and has served as a teacher and athletic coach at high schools in Birmingham as well as in his hometown, Atlanta, Georgia. While coaching at his alma mater, South Atlanta High School, he led the basketball team to a 30-1 season and to the Georgia State Championship game. Under his leadership, the team won the Atlanta City Championship as well as the regional and sub-regional titles. The basketball team was ranked #1 in Georgia and #24 nationally, and Cedric Lane was named Georgia Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year. Cedric Lane has served the Birmingham City Schools as an English Teacher and high school coach for fourteen years. As Head Coach of the basketball and softball teams at Wenonah High School, Cedric Lane has built the teams into highly respected programs. The basketball team won 91 games and 2 state championships in the Alabama 5A division over the past three years and was ranked #1 in Alabama for the last three years. He has sent over twenty players to college to play on division one, division two, and junior college teams. Wenonah High School’s softball team has won three consecutive City Championship games, and has played in five. The softball team has been to the state playoffs all six years that Cedric Lane has coached the team. ESPN has ranked the softball team at #13 in the nation’s Southeast Region. Cedric Lane’s leadership has led to the basketball team’s national ranking by ESPN, who has projected the team to win a third state championship title next year. Mr. Lane was named Birmingham Grid Forecasters Coach of the Year and Birmingham City Coach of the Year in 2007. In 2010, he was chosen as Alabama State Coach of the Year, Birmingham News West Coach of the Year, Birmingham Tip-Off Clubs Coach of the Year, and Birmingham City Coach of the Year. In 2011, Cedric Lane was chosen as Division 5A State Coach of the Year and Birmingham News Coach of the Year. This year, Cedric Lane was named Birmingham Athletic Partnership Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the Nation’s Best High School Coach of the Year award. He also served as Alabama head coach in this year’s winning effort in the Alabama v. Mississippi All Star Game. Mr. Lane also aspires to become Head Basketball Coach at Miles College in the near future. Cedric Lane has made time for community involvement by serving at a tutor for ACT and Exit Examination preparation classes and serving as a volunteer coach at the Fairfield Recreation Center and at several basketball camps. In both his professional and charitable endeavors, he exemplifies the qualities of a successful Milean.
