James H. Ethridge Jr. came to Miles College from A.H Parker High where he played baseball for Coach William Brown. James was a pitcher, averaging 89 - 90 mph. He became one of
the top pitchers in the state. Well known for, “slider screw ball”l and striking out the sides at least 2-3 times per game. He averaged 7-11 strikeouts per game. He was a strong left-hand pitcher, that is where he received the name “lefty.” In 1980 he pursued his career at the Miles College Golden Bears and remained the Top pitcher and led his team to multiple playoff appearances. After his years at Miles College. James played in the Negro Industrial Semi-League from 1979 to1993 and was inducted into the Negro League Hall of Fame.
