Jonas Harris Jr. (2019)
Jonas Harris, Jr. I was born in Douglas, Georgia. My parents are Jonas Sr. (deceased) and Maggie Harris. I have four siblings. My family and I lived in Douglas until the summer of 1959, then moved to Tampa, Fl. I, my mother, and three siblings are presently living in Tampa. Moving from Douglas, Ga to Tampa, Fl. was different and challenging. My parents were mindful that we had moved from a small town to a large city and was very attentive to their five children. We all attended and graduated through the public school system. I would return to Douglas, Ga during the months to help my aunt and uncle work in the tobacco fields. There is no doubt that the tobacco fields introduced me to hard work. Hard work is what has gotten my wife and me to live successful lives. My wife is Audrey Harris, whom I met during the summer of 1969. This summer, June 2019 will mark 50 Years of us being together (forty-four years married). We have one daughter and three granddaughters. They keep us busy. I began playing football at the age of 7. I was a successful athlete and received a football scholarship to Miles College in 1970. At Miles, I lettered for four years and started and finished every game. Miles College helped me determine my destiny. Miles provided the education, maturity, sense of urgency, and confidence that I used to compete in this world. For that, I thank Miles College for its contribution to my life. After my life at Miles, joined the U.S. Army and retired in 1996 as a Chief Warrant Officer. My family and I traveled often and lived far from home for twenty years and two months. Some of this time was spent in different countries. With both foresight and hindsight, we loved the experiences. My leadership skills were acquired from home, Blake High School, and Miles College. The experiences at these institutions provided me with an abundance of tools to succeed in life. Life after the Army has been exciting. I decided to go into something different and worked in the Retail Automobile Sales industry. I worked in the business for sixteen years. I loved the personal relationships I established with people. I did well and moved up the ladder fast from Salesman to Finance Manager and retired as a Sales Manager. The workdays and the hours were long. My wife and I retired in 2012. We have been retired for seven years. Now our families and granddaughters make our days and hours longer. I want to take this opportunity to thank you for taking the time to read my brief life story.
