Karen Carter-Gibbs (2008)
Karen Carter-Gibbs graduated from Newton County High School in Oxford, Georgia. She played basketball, softball, ran track, and was an avid weightlifter. She received an athletic scholarship to Miles College and played basketball, volleyball, ran track and cross country. In basketball, she played four positions, including power forward. In track, she ran 100 and 200 meter dashes and the 4x100 relay, ran cross country, and was a shot-putter. She participated in athletics for four years and assisted with the basketball in her fifth year. During her career as a basketball player, she was a most valuable player (MVP), and was rebounder of the year, offensive and defensive player of the year and set a school scoring record of 49 points in a single basketball game.
After receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Bachelor of Arts Degree, she returned to Newton County where she sought and accepted employment as a teacher/coach in the Newton County School System. She obtained a Masters Degree from Troy State University and an Ed.S from Lincoln University. She is involved in the SES Math and Reading Tutorial Programs, ALPHA Reading, Inc., Platform Math And Reading IEW, HOSEA Feed the Hungry, Teen Girls Conference, where over 300 girls participate, Boys Summit with over 300 participants, Black-tie Affairs for the community, Miss Black
Newton County Scholarships Pageant, which helps generate $5000.00 in Scholarships and inspires her girl's basketball team to become the best they can be in basketball and in life. She was President of a Woman's Club and President of J.O.U.R.N.E.Y. Book Club of girls. Karen is a member of Springfield Baptist Church. She is currently the Assistant Principal at Clements Middle School - Covington, Georgia. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
