Kenneth Hatcher
Kenneth Hatcher Sr. is a native of Birmingham and educated in the Birmingham School System, He graduated from Jones Valley High School in 1977, where he was a standout student-athlete in the sports of baseball and basketball. He went on to play 4 years of baseball at Alabama State University where he served as captain for 2 years and received a Bachelors of Science Degree in Accounting in addition to an Associate Degree in Applied Fire Science from Jefferson State Community College.
Coach Hatcher served 17 seasons as the head baseball coach of the Miles College Golden Bears (2000 thru 2016) with over 350 victories on the field, he has more wins than any coach in the history of Miles College Baseball. Under his guidance, Miles College Baseball has become one of the most competitive programs in the SIAC. As, head coach, he was instrumental in improving the quality of baseball at Miles College as well as the level of respect given to other SIAC baseball programs. GPA’s for student-athletes were 3.0 and above. Coach Hatcher’s 2016 team holds the record for the most victories in a single season in school history with 32 victories.
Coach Hatcher was 3 times named SIAC Coach of the Year 2003, 2006 and his final coaching season 2016. He managed his teams to 4 consecutive western division titles from 2003 to 2006 and for 9 straight seasons, they finished no less than 2nd within the division. While serving as the NCAA South Region Chairperson for the SIAC, Coach Hatcher was instrumental in convincing the committee that the SIAC champion deserved an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, which went into effect in 2007.
Coach Hatcher focused on developing young men to be productive in society. Of his former players following in his footsteps,7 are high school baseball coaches, 6 are firefighters, and 3 are now running the Miles College Baseball program that won their first SIAC Baseball Championship this year 2017.
Currently, he serves the community as a Battalion Chief with the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service and married for 33 years to his wife Phyllis and they have two sons Kenneth Jr. and Kristopher and 2 grandsons Jaylen and Jaxon.
