Lamar E. Barnett (2012)
Lamar E. Barnett accepted both academic and athletic scholarships from Miles College. A four-year starter as tight-end on the football team, Mr. Barnett played under coaches Jimmy Holifield and Earl Cheatham. He was fully committed to the team’s success on the field. Lamar Barnett graduated from Miles College in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. He accepted a position with the General Motors Acceptance Corporation and recently retired after 34 years of service. Since his collegiate days, Lamar Barnett has participated in several community involvement activities, including coaching youth sports teams (football and basketball) through the Boys and Girls Clubs and the YMCA in Florida and Georgia. He coached the West-End Boys and Girls Club in Montgomery, and led Alabama’s Pee-Wee football team to their first City Championship in 1983. Mr. Barnett has also assisted in homeless and drug abuse outreach efforts in Alabama and Florida, and taken part in various charity walks in Atlanta, Georgia and in Florida. Lamar Barnett retired from the General Motors Acceptance Corporation. This father of five (5) children and seven (7) grandchildren now devotes his time to his high school officiating career of twenty-six (26) years in both football and basketball, and recently became a semi-pro official in Atlanta, Georgia.
