Leon P. Jones (1978)
Leon P. Jones was born on December 7, 1940 in Birmingham, Alabama to Leonard Jones and Annie Bell Jones. He served in the United States Air Force in 1963 until his honorable discharge in 1967. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Social Science/History from Miles College in 1969, and obtained his Master of Education, Administration/Supervision from Alabama State University in 1975. Leon worked as a recreation leader for the City of Birmingham Park & Recreation Board, and worked for Miles College in various capacities, including Track Coach/Administrative Assistant, Track Program Recruiter, Sports Information Director, Director of Public Relations, and Assistant to the President. He also worked as a Community Resources Officer for Jefferson County Office of Planning and Community Development, and worked as a Federal Investigator for the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) for 35 years.
He was involved in several civic and social organizations over the years, as follows: President, Miles College Sports Hall of Fame; President, Moonlight Mixed Bowling League; Chairperson, Time and Place Committee, United Negro College Fund NAC Board; Member,
Greater Birmingham Inter-Alumni Council of the United Negro College Fund; Member, American Council of Public Relations Association; Charter Member, Public Relations Council of Alabama; Member, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People; Outstanding Leaders of America; Member, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. He also received various Outstanding Performance Awards from EEOC, and received the Outstanding Service Award from the National Council of the United Negro College Fund.
Leon passed away on November 7, 2013 at Trinity Medical Center. He is preceded in death by his parents, Leonard Jones and Annie Bell Jones, one sister, Mattie Williams, and three brothers, Willie Jones, Sr., John Jones and Robert Lee Jones. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn W. Jones, two daughters, LaTonya C. Jones and ReShea J. Balams (Emanuel), two brothers, Larry Jones and Leonard Jones (Lillie), two sisters, Shirley Murrell and Patricia Lofton, and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Leon was Inducted Into the Sports Hall of Fame in 1981 for lettering in Track. He served as President and recently elected Vice President.
