Shannon Summerville 2024
Shannon Summerville graduated from A. H. Parker High School in 1994 and was given an athletic scholarship to play football for Miles College. During his tenure at Miles College, under the guidance of Coach Cecil Leonard, Summerville was a four-year starter at the position of defensive end. While playing, he amassed impressive college career stats with 158 total tackles (36 solo), 31 sacks, 22 tackles for losses, 1 interception, and 1 touchdown.
In 1997 he was chosen as a member of the SIAC All Conference Defensive Team. In 1998 he led the team and SIAC Conference in sacks with a total of 14. He was later selected as a member of the Carolina Twisters Semi Pro Football Team where he played one year as a defensive end before ending his football career.
In 1999 he graduated Miles College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education and began working as a 6th grade science and math teacher at L. M. Smith Middle School. He became the Head Football Coach at Smith Middle School, winning the Middle School Football Championship in 2001 and earning the title of Birmingham City School’s Coach of the Year. While teaching science, he partnered with the University of Alabama at Birmingham and piloted a science program called AMSTI aiming to integrate hands-on science activities in the classroom. The program was a success, helping him to earn Birmingham City School’s Teacher of the Year in 2002. He went on to further his education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham acquiring his master’s degree in Educational Administration and graduating Summa Cum Laude at the University of Montevallo with his Specialist Degree in Administrative Leadership. He later went on to serve the West End community and Arrington Elementary School as the Assistant Principal.
During which time he tirelessly worked in the community to improve the quality of education for the children by hosting and coordinating Literacy Reading Camps for the students during the summer breaks. He currently serves as the minister of 30th Avenue Church of Christ, a position where he has labored for over 12 years. Of his achievements, his greatest would be his two daughters, Jordan and Jacy Summerville. Shannon is forever indebted to Miles College for giving him the opportunity to showcase his athletic talents, obtain a college degree, and serve his community as a proud product of Miles College.
